20% of Latvians live in housing deemed by the EU to constitute as severe housing deprivation i.e over crowding, a lack of a bath or a toilet, a leaking roof in the dwelling, or a dwelling considered as being too dark
A report on government provided social housing concluded that 50% of the housing was over 25 years old, and has had no renovation work carried out on it in that time. This means that the insulation and sanitation of these buildings is insufficient.
The most common features of our families’ houses are damp, mould-covered walls and unhygienic communal toilets, all of which are incredibly unsafe. Children grow up in freezing environments, playing in corridors that have little light and are a haven for social ills.
